Face of Margerie Glacier
Face of Margerie Glacier in Glacier Bay, Alaska.
At the very end of Glacier Bay, in Alaska, you stand in front of the Margerie Glacier, a huge tidewater glacier with a very uneven face, about a mile wide, about 250 feet above the water and 21 miles deep. Even though the larger ships stop about a mile from the face of the glacier you still get a fell for its enormous size. I made this image of a recently calved portion of the face of the Margerie Glacier with large chunks of fallen ice at its base and reflecting off the bay in the midday sun.
