Humpback whale diving into Auke Bay near Juneau, Alaska.

We’ve all seen photographs of whales diving with their tails just breaking into the water as the whales disappear beneath the surface.  The actual sight, which is very dramatic, is usually viewed from a distance and has a spacious, rather than close up, feel- which is far different from the “normal” whale tail pictures. I made this image because it has an expansive, realistic, feel with your eye being drawn to the whale’s tail even though you're well aware that you’re in the middle of a very large bay.
