Where’s Dinner

Brown bear wondering where the salmon went near Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park, Alaska.

We flew back to Brooks Falls, in spite of the fact that the July salmon run was almost over, because all the other remote bear viewing areas were inaccessible due to bad weather- a fairly common Alaskan photo complication.  We did, fortunately, see a few bears try to catch salmon in front of the falls.  This particular bear, who did’t catch anything, spent a lot of time walking and diving back and forth trying to snare a salmon.  We were told that bears generally only catch fish on ten percent of their attempts. I made this image after one of his uneventful plunges into the water when, with water dripping off his head, he seemed to realize that he wasn’t going to catch dinner today.
